Transplants of stem cells have freed patients with type 1 diabetes of daily insulin injections, researchers have announced.

The majority of patients with type 1 diabetes, which mostly develops in childhood and is not associated with obesity, were able to stop their insulin injections for an average of two and a half years after treatment with their own stem cells.
